Snow had started falling again as they stopped to pick up Olaf at Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna and then made their way back into the village later in the day. When they arrived in Arendelle, lights were flickering in every window, but it didn’t appear as if anyone was working on the Polar Nights festivities. In fact, it was as if they didn’t remember the celebration at all.

As they walked toward the newspaper office, they ran into Mattias, who was sitting beneath their parents’ tribute statue, staring down at a photo of himself and Halima, shaking his head, looking puzzled.

“We’re back,” Anna told him. “How has everything been since we were gone?”

Mattias glanced up at the two of them, a blank look on his face. “Everything is fine,” he said flatly. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

Anna’s chest tightened. “Uh, I don’t know. Pirates off our shores? Crazy strong storms? Weird zombies lurking in the shadows?”

“I haven’t heard any of that,” Mattias said with a shrug; Anna’s stomach plummeted. Mattias pushed the photo in his hands in their direction. “Do you happen to know who this is? She looks so familiar, but I can’t place her.”

“Someone special. I think you’ll find her over there,” Elsa said, helping him up from his seat and gently directing him toward Hudson’s Hearth—the tavern owned by the love of his life, whom he currently didn’t seem to remember. Mattias nodded vacantly, then started toward the building. But he seemed to forget where he was going before he was halfway there. Suddenly he began walking in the other direction, whistling tunelessly.

Elsa shot Anna a concerned look. “This isn’t good,” she said. “If Mattias has lost his memories, too, there’s no one to look out for Arendelle.”

“All the more reason we need to get to the bottom of Inger and Sissel’s story fast,” Anna declared, trying not to show how worried she was inside. Her people were counting on her. Kristoff was counting on her—whether he remembered it or not. She couldn’t let any of them down.

And I won’t, she told herself firmly. One way or another, we’re going to stop this draugr. We’re going to make things right.

“Come on,” she said to Elsa. “Let’s go find Wael.”
